How Dirty Is Your Purse? The Shocking Germs Lurking on Handbags

Women often carry their purses everywhere, which means their bags can pick up germs from different places. This exposure may lead to carrying around harmful microbes all day, increasing the risk of getting sick.

Microbiologist Chuck Gerba, who researches where disease-causing organisms are commonly found, discovered that germs often accumulate on the outside of women’s purses, especially on the bottom. “We found fecal bacteria that you usually encounter on restroom floors,” Gerba explained. “There were also bacteria that can cause skin infections, and the large numbers indicate that purses are picking up other germs, like cold viruses or even ones that cause diarrhea.”

ABC News asked Gerba to conduct tests using a hand-held germ meter to show how much bacteria could be found on purses. The results ranged from concerning to alarming, with health experts worried when the meter’s readings went over 200, which indicates thousands of bacteria.

In one test, thousands of germs were found on a purse bought just a month earlier. Another bag that had been carried for years had “hundreds of thousands of germs” on it. In total, ABC News and Gerba tested the bottoms of 10 women’s purses, finding bacteria on every single one. Most had tens of thousands, while a few had millions. One purse even had 6.7 million bacteria.

When I buy a new purse, I always have the store place my purse in a separate store bag. When I get home, I wipe the purse down with clorox wipes, testing a hidden spot first to make sure it doesn’t damage the material. I do the same with wallets, backpacks, briefcases, luggages & tote bags. I wash the tote bags made of cloth materia, using clorox bleach for color clothes.
