Hi, Delora here!
Over 20 years ago, I took a class about colors, and it changed how I see fashion. I learned how to help people find the colors that look best on them based on their skin tone. Did you know your skin has an undertone? For example, as an African American woman with a blue undertone and dark skin, I’m a Winter. Colors like black, royal blue, true red, royal purple, pure white, hot pink, evergreen, and deep chocolate brown look best on me.
If you’re a Fall, you’ll shine in warm colors like orange, cream, olive green, warm beige, salmon, and coffee brown.
Spring tones are warm and fresh, including apricot, warm pastel pink, turquoise, and warm aqua.
Summer colors are softer but similar to Winter, like periwinkle blue, soft white, lavender, and watermelon.
Now, this doesn’t mean you can’t wear colors outside your season! For colors that aren’t “yours,” wear them as bottoms—like skirts, pants, or shorts. If you want to wear a top or dress in an unflattering color, add a scarf or accessory in your best color to brighten your face.
Here’s a fun test: pick one color from each season and try them on. Look in the mirror and take a picture of yourself in each. You’ll notice which colors flatter your face and which don’t. Try this test, and let me know in the comments what season you think you are!
Here’s a quick tip: when someone compliments you, do they say, “That dress is so pretty”? If so, the dress is wearing you. But if they say, “You look so pretty in that dress,” they’re noticing you first—exactly what you want!
In my next post, I’ll talk about clothing personalities. Are you Natural, Classic, Dramatic, or something else? Be sure to check back next month to find out!
